FLV is a streaming video format that is very widely used on a large number of online video sites - websites like youtube, dailymotion, last.fm and many many others.

If you're anything like me, sometimes you want to rip the video you've spent ages looking for to your own computer, so you can keep it just for old times sake and watch it again at your leisure or when friends come round. Whatever. You want to rip a video, and you can't find a way to do it. I had the same problem a few months back, and search everywhere for software that would let me rip a few videos from youtube. I found all sorts of stuff online, but most of it didn't work. I also wanted to rip the bbc iplayer video as well, which is near impossible!

How to rip dvd's to your ipod

Having recently gone travelling for a few months, I was faced with a bit of a problem in that I wanted to take some dvd's with me to watch along the way on flights/train journeys etc.

I didn't necessarily want to take a heavy-ish laptop with me, as well as dvd discs, power supplies etc etc, so I decided to just take an ipod touch instead. Problem was how to get the dvd movies onto the ipod without spending years doing it, and without filling the ipod after about 2 movies!

I searched around a bit and found the DVD converter Suite, a great little piece of software perfect for the job! It let me rip dvd movies quickly and easily, and then convert them into smaller file formats that I was able to watch on my ipod touch - end result, I was able to cram about 15 movies onto the ipod, a bunch more onto the netbook I also took with me (no dvd drive) and keep myself amused right the way through the whole of my trip.

Now I'm back home I'm still enjoying the software, ripping movies to watch on the daily commute. Found this website today thanks to technorati, its just been launched on a wordpress platform, and looks great - a custom theme design, a really clean, clear look with fixed width, minimal graphics, a 5 col footer and 2/3 column layout. Love the auto stretching 2 col parts of the sidebar, which also houses a twitter feed, and recent last fm tracks and the authors current book reads.

Worth making a note of, just for the quality fo the theme alone! Content is a little sparse at present, as its just launched, but will be interesting to see how it matures and developes! It certainly shows a lot of promise, and is a very professional looking design by the blog owner, Edward Beauchamp. He is the guy who is also responsible for the design and build of wordpress based Opinel knives shop, opinels.co.uk.

really cool clean design, a little online based on wordpress which is no mean feat!! :)

Just launched is socklover, a really cool website to put the love back into buying socks! Based in the UK, the site is a heavily hacked around version of wordpress, to allow users to ourchase socks online via paypal checkout.
A wide range of brands is promised, to appeal to all budgets, but for now there are socks from pantherella and richard james socks to get your feet feeling the love!

I have a lot of parked domains that i have accumulated over the years, as i'm sure a lot of people do. Its been on my mind lately how i can monetize them, or at least get them to pay their own registration fees each year! To that end, i have had a bit of a search around and came up with a couple of useful reults.

First off, over at business and life there is a list of useful links for making some money out of your domain names, so have a look at that.

Secondly, i found this a very handy php script that you can install on your parked domain in seconds, and have your own parked, monetized domain running in a couple of minutes tops - and they look so much better than the usual parked page.

rip streaming video

A few weeks ago i watched a music video on youtube...went back to watch it again yesterday, only to discover its been taken down by the copyright police :( which got me to thinking...sometimes it would be handy to be able to download the video when i found it, to avoid such crap...same thing happens all the time with movie trailers as well.

Anyway, i found vidgrabbr.com which has proved jolly useful! Real nice clean design, the easiest thing ever to use :)
All you do is paste in the url of the page the video you want is on (you can do youtube, dailymotion, and a few others as well), hit go and the video is ripped out of the page and downloaded to your PC right there and then.

Do bear in mind that most video is .flv, so it won't play in media player or much else - so you'll need a converter of some sort. I downloaded a copy of youtube robot from vidgrabbr, which i find great - you can download video from the software itself, and convert to a variety of filetypes suitable for pc or mobile devices such as your ipod or mobile phone! Marvellous :)
